Steps to Healthy Development

Infant/Toddler (0-2) Healthy parents ready to nurture and love

Believe it or not, it's never too early for parents to begin thinking about school. To give a newborn a good chance for future academic success, parents should consider enrolling them in a pre-school program before they’re three years old. Children tend to have good success in elementary school if they attend pre-school by this age.

At KidZone, we encourage parents to ask: “Is my three-year-old enrolled in pre-school?”

Preschooler (3-5) Healthy and ready to learn

Children ages three (3) through five (5) years of age are considered toddlers. A key step to a toddler’s future success is for them to be registered for kindergarten as early as possible. The Philadelphia School District allows parents/caregivers to register their kids many months before the start of school. What are you waiting for?!

At KidZone, we encourage parents to ask: “Is my five-year-old registered for kindergarten?”

Child (6-9) Ready for school

More and more research is finding that children and youth who regularly participate in afterschool activities also achieve greater school success. For example,

  • Students in a statewide program in California improved their standardized test scores (SAT-9) in both reading and math by percentages almost twice that of other students and also had better school attendance. The program cut high school drop out by 20%. (University of California Irvine, May 2001 and March 2006)
  • Boys and girls in the Quantum Opportunities afterschool program were half as likely to drop out of high school and two and one half times more likely to go on to further education after high school than their peers. (Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, 2000)
  • Students (pre-k through 8th grade) in The After-School Corporation (TASC) supported afterschool programs improved their math scores and regular school day attendance compared to non-participants. High school level afterschool participants passed more Regent exams and earned more high school credits than non-participants. (Policy Studies Associates, July 2004)

At KidZone, we encourage parents to ask: “Is my child in a quality afterschool program?”

Pre-teen (10-13) Reading and math levels at grade level

Moving from junior high school to high school is a big deal. KidZone aims to help make this transition smooth by promoting the idea of orientation during the seventh grade so that students know what to expect and show up to high school prepared to get the most out of the experience. One critical indicator of high school success is aptitude with algebra.

At KidZone, we encourage parents to ask: “Has my eighth grader taken algebra?”

Teenager (14-18) Ready for high school

For many high school is a time to have fun, but there are important things to do to get ready for college or work after graduation. Studies have shown that students who complete a financial aid application actually have a better chance of going to college. Similarly, for those students who plan to go to work after high school, it is helpful to do an internship or have a job before graduating. KidZone can help students achieve both of these goals.

At KidZone, we encourage parents to ask: “Did my senior complete a financial aid application?” “Has my junior had a work experience?”

Young Adult (19-24) Ready for college and work

While young adulthood may be the final stage in a person’s developmental transitions, it also marks the beginning of true independence and self-sufficiency. KidZone envisions this as a time when people begin to think about helping others in the community, especially young people who are making their way through the earlier stages of transition into adulthood.
